Guess what! This is my 100th post!!! Woohoo!! This blog has come a long way since its early days on Tumblr, and I want to thank you all so much for sticking with me on this health and fitness journey.
In honor of new and exciting things (and today’s HealthysELF challenge to try a new workout) I stepped outside of my workout comfort zone and tried TWO new workouts this week!
The first was a Bikram Yoga class at a brand new yoga studio in the city, Bikram Yoga Herald Square. I heard about this class from Lululemon. I know Lululemon is getting some heat right now, but I’m still such a fan of what the company stands for (besides sheer pants, of course) and the health and fitness initiatives they share with the community. For instance, every season, Lululemon partners with a different yoga studio in NYC and offers up free classes to their shoppers. I’ve always wanted to try Bikram, or hot yoga, so I saw their partnership with this new studio as the perfect chance!
The studio at Bikram Yoga Herald Square is beautiful. They have a nice open lobby, a beautiful locker room, and a gorgeous studio. They also offer free mats, towels, and lockers whenever you go! If you’re not a yogi, here’s a super quick background on Bikram:
- typically consists of a series of 26 postures and 2 breathing exercises
- is practiced in a room at 105 degrees F and 40% humidity
Yep, you saw that right, 105 degrees! I walked into the studio and it felt like a sauna. I lied down on my mat to wait for the class to start and thought, “This isn’t so bad. Kinda nice actually.” Well, then class started. I was drenched in sweat in about, oh, 2 minutes, and the first 5 minutes were just breathing exercises! Seriously, I don’t think I’ve ever sweat like that in my life, and that includes my two months doing Insanity! I felt so great afterwards and felt that good-kind-of-sore the next day. Although 90 minutes is a lot to commit to, I’d definitely do another Bikram class again.
Then, two days later I tried out another new class courtesy of some of my fellow sweat-workers.
Bodyconceptions is a dance-inspired cardio workout started by Mahri Relin, a kick-ass dancer and personal trainer who use to work with Tracy Anderson and Flywheel Sports. When I first heard dance-inspired cardio, I thought, “Cool. That should be fun. I have no rhythm, but fun!”
The class I took was held at Dance New Amsterdam, a cool dance space by City Hall Park. The space is amazing:
Anyway, this class was MUCH harder than I was expecting, but it was so much fun! Mahri has us moving in ways I’ve never moved before. My muscles were burning, red-hot burning, the entire class, but somehow the time flew by. At the end of the class, she turned the lights off and we all danced in the dark! It was a great workout, and I welcomed some complimentary juice from Organic Avenue afterwards!
Although it’s tough to do so, I really enjoy stepping out of my comfort zone when it comes to working out. I like to challenge my body and my mind to experience new things and push to new limits. Have you tried any new workouts lately? How did you feel afterwards?
