Oh boy am I excited for today. Why? Because last week I got to workout with one of my favorite celebrity trainers and today I get to share that experience with you! Yippee!
Ok – so here’s what happened.
I got an email a few weeks back asking if I’d like to join Tony Horton (yep – the creator of p90x!) in a demo of his brand new fitness program – 22 Minute Hard Corps. I did p90x a while back, loved it and saw great results from it, so my response was a resounding heck-to-the-yes.
I arrived at the New York Health and Racquet Club on 56th Street last Wednesday morning and immediately got excited when I saw Tony. I took a photo like a creeper…
…but totally didn’t have to because he offered to take pre-sweaty pics with everyone!
Then it was go time! He gave us a quick overview of the program, which sounds awesome. Basically, 22 Minute Hard Corps is an 8-week boot camp fitness program, requiring only 22 minutes a day. They’re 22 super sweat-inducing minutes – but still just 22 minutes! Here are the basics of the program:
22 Minute Hard Corps takes you through a series of total-body rounds designed to maximize strength gains and fat loss within the 22-minute workout video. Each day, you’ll alternate between functional resistance, cardio and core-focused workouts. There are 3 cardio workouts, 3 resistance workouts and 2 core workouts. You’ll also get a guide to help track your progress, a basic nutrition plan, a optional Hell Week challenge card to push yourself even further and a pre-workout drill.
There is also an optional buy-up option, which includes 3 additional workouts, a sandbag and nutrition containers to take the guess work out of portion sizes.
Back to my time to with Tony!
After that quick little intro and a quick warm up, we were diving into the workout. I was red in the face and sweating mere minutes in. He showed us how to do each move and included modifications, but honestly the moves are things anyone can do. Nothing too fancy or complicated – just good workout moves that hit the whole body. It’s quick, but it’s intense!
Afterwards, I was able to sit down for a one-on-one to ask Tony more about the program. As sweat was dripping down my arms and temples, I jumped right into my questions:
This program is so different from p90x. What inspired you to create this workout?
It’s totally different. We thought about X4 but just felt it was time to do something new. I’ve been to almost 50 military bases around the world. I’ve done about 4 or 5 domestic tours… I’ve had a real introduction into what the military does, and… there are a lot of people in this country who have a strong affiliation with our troops. Now they get to make a real connection and actually experience something like a boot camp. It’s an overall vibe that allows the average person to say, “Hey, ya know, I do more than support the troops. I actually participate in something that feels in alignment with them by moving physically.” And we just wanted a complete departure from the X series. We wanted something basic. You know if you look at p90x there’s a big learning curve for a lot of it. We wanted to bring more people into the fray, give them an idea of what it’s like to go through a boot camp. And the 8-week commitment, the 22 minutes and the fact that there is very little equipment involved and the price point (it’s only $39.90!) it just brings in more people and helps more people get fit. It just felt like the natural next step.
How did you start putting the whole program together? It must haven taken a long time.
Development was about 6 months. We gather a team of people. I worked with Paul Tharp, who is a Navy Seal Commander and a friend of mine to work on some of the moves and make sure it was something the average person could do. The moves are hard, but they’re doable because they’re basic. The learning curve is almost zero. There is also a sense of camaraderie when it comes to a program like this because it’s a team thing (Tony has you shout out rep counts and things throughout the workout – so even if you’re working out at home, you can feel like you’re really part of the video workout). That was the main inspiration for the whole thing.
What does the whole program entail?
There’s 3 cardio workouts, 3 resistance and 2 core workouts. There’s also Special Opps, which is an up-sell. It’s a sandbag and workout and containers for nutrition and food planning. The sandbag is a nice departure from standard dumbbells and you can regulate the amount of weight.
I could have kept asking questions and chatting with Tony because he is awesome, but unfortunately, I could only snag a few minutes. If you’ve ever done one of his workout videos, he’s exactly how he seems: totally friendly, down to earth and encouraging. I was really excited when they sent me home with the entire program. I can’t wait to try it all out!
Moral of the story is, you should check out 22 Minute Hard Corps! It’s a really awesome, quick yet intense workout you can do anywhere. The cast of men and women featured throughout the videos includes several United States veterans, representing each branch of the U.S. military, which is just a nice touch. The program is available for $39.90 on Beachbody.com OR you could test your luck and enter to win the whole 22 Minute Hard Corps program PLUS Beachbody’s 3-Day Refresh to help kickstart your fitness goals (open to US, UK and Canada!). I’m excited! I hope you’re excited! Let’s channel that excitement right on into giveaway entries! Do it to it my hard corps friends!
