Running and cross training help keep me fit. They give me energy and make me feel confident and strong. While these benefits are amazing, tough workouts can also have a negative impact on your joints. Pounding on the pavement can do damage to your ankles, knees and hips. Lifting heavy weights can stress the joints you use to do so.
There’s no way I’m going to stop running or cross training just because of that, though! There are plenty of ways to protect your joints from the day-to-day grind, and I’m here to share a few of my favorites.
1. Sit and Stand
Standing desks are a great way to go, but you shouldn’t be standing all day, just like you shouldn’t sit all day. Alternate between sitting and standing, or, if you don’t have standing desk, take walk breaks every 30-60 minutes. Just try not to stay in one position for extended periods of time.
2. Slim down
There are plenty of reasons you should maintain a healthy bodyweight, and protecting your joints is just one of them. Extra body weight puts more stress on your joints, especially on your knees. Consult with your doctor, trainer and nutritionist about healthy ways to help you get to a healthy weight for your age, height, lifestyle and activity level.
3. Eat more fish
Certain types of fish (salmon, mackerel, tuna) are high in Omega-3 fatty acids, which can help keep joints healthy. Omega-3s have also been shown to reduce inflammation of stiff joints.
Taking a supplement to support joint health is never a bad idea. I’ve been taking GOPO for the past four weeks and have felt a significant difference in how my joints feel, especially after long runs. My ankles and knees use to be “creaky” after runs. They’d feel tired and make a popping sound as I walked. Since taking GOPO, that creakiness is completely gone!
The trick is galactolipids, which occur naturally in rose hips, the fruit of a rose, and is the key ingredient in GOPO. You can find rose hips in a variety of supplements, but GOPO used science to grow a unique rose cultivar and refined it to its most potent form to offer a supplement with galactolipids specifically designed for joint care.
GOPO has been clinically proven and used throughout Europe, but now it’s also available in the good old USofA! You can find it at The Vitamin Shoppe, Vitamin World and online, and I’m also giving away 3 vouchers for a FREE bottle of GOPO below!
5. Get wet
Water exercises can help keep you active without stressing your joints. If you have access to a pool, try taking up swimming, water running or water aerobics. I’ve even seen underwater spinning classes pop up at certain gyms!
