Winter, you have proven a true foe. Your bitter chills deter me. Your horrid rains and blinding white storms have trapped me. Your conversion of the tiniest drop of water into a sheet of menacing ice would keep even the greatest ice skater at bay. But what really gets me, Winter, is how you have been able to keep me from a fresh, outdoor run for almost two months.
(Edited from this Source)
Well Winter, I have been held captive by you for too long. Last week, you showed the slightest bit of weakness. Your frigid temps rose ever so slightly, giving way to an almost warm rain that washed away the mounds of frozen snow and menacing ice. If you thought, for one second, that I wouldn’t use that to make my move, you were mistaken.
Are you liking this drama? I feel like I’m writing an epic novel. Maybe every post should be like this. Anyway, I am writing so theatrically because this is a huge deal for me. After weeks of not running outside, the horrible winter weather finally let up and I was able to hit the pavement!
Normally, cold weather (even snow) wouldn’t keep me from running outdoors, but snow paired with freezing temps turns the sidewalks here into pure sheets of ice, and I just can’t run on ice. I will die. And then I’ll never run again. Not even on treadmill. The horra!
Last week, we got a glimpse of warmer weather. By that, I mean it was 40 degrees. I took off my hat, my hands were freed from the binds of gloves. We got a rain that wasn’t frigid and it washed Winter away, at least for the moment.
I put on my sneaks and rushed out the door. I felt free! I felt fast. I felt like a true runner again. I loved the fresh air, the feeling of pavement under my feet, the fact that I had to motivate myself rather than have a treadmill belt do it for me. Heck, I even liked the exhaust from the Brooklyn traffic. Ok, not really, but still, let freedom ring! I felt like singing Queen’s I Want to Break Free the whole time. Who’s with me?
Who else has been trapped in Winter’s prison? Have you been able to break free lately?
