Birchbox, BeBox, Snack Box – Subscription boxes are the thing lately. I don’t know who came up with the first box, but he/she is a genius. There are even boxes that send you clothes (I need to stay away from that one before I get addicted)!
If you haven’t heard of subscription boxes yet, you might want to crawl out from under that rock because they’re pretty awesome. The premise, more or less, is that each month you receive a box filled with samples of new products (cosmetics for a beauty box, food in a snack box, etc). That way, you can test out products before you buy them. It’s also a great way to get introduced to new products in the category. The subscriptions range in price. The cheapest I’ve seen is $10 a month, and the most expensive was $60! I would say the average is $20, though.
I’ve tried a few different boxes, but most recently, I tried Bulubox, a subscription box filled with vitamin, supplement, and health-related products. I received my first box a few weeks ago and just finished giving everything a test run.
The Bulubox I received was filled with products that up your energy or promote relaxation. To be honest, I was a little wary of everything in the box. I don’t like to take anything to help “wake me up” besides a cup of coffee in the morning (which I’m missing right now during the Green Smoothie Challenge!), and the only time I take sleep supplements is when I need nighttime cough syrup.
But in the name of experimenting for the blog, I gave them a go. Below are my thoughts:
Aero Shot Energy – This was kind of like using an inhaler, except it was flavored. It tasted pretty good, but I had to take a sip of water to get the chalky texture out of my mouth. It did start working right away, though. I felt it in my head and it definitely woke me up for my morning workout.
Dream Water – This was probably my least favorite product of the bunch. I took it a few minutes before bed, and I actually had a terrible night’s sleep. It took me forever to fall asleep, and then I woke up multiple times during the night. The bad night’s sleep could be totally unrelated to the product, but for a product called Dream Water, I was expecting some better dreams.
Gift Card to iTrain – This seemed pretty cool. I went online to see what programs iTrain had to offer. I was expecting some videos, but from what I gathered from their website, it’s just a trainer talking through itunes. A lot of the programs also require gym equipment (a treadmill or an elliptical). Seeing as I don’t have access to a gym, and I really love seeing the exercise vs trying to figure out what it looks like, I didn’t end up using my gift card.
QuickFIre – This product contains a ton of caffeine. I was actually worried it would have too strong an effect on me, so I stayed away from it completely.
QSpeed – These are little dissolvable tablets meant to boost your energy and workout performance. One dose is two tablets, but I took one on two separate occasions. I popped one in right before a run and I will say it helped me run a bit faster than usual. I wouldn’t be opposed to using the product again, but I also wouldn’t go out of my way to buy it.
Redd Remedies At Ease PM – This was another sleep/relaxation supplement. I didn’t feel it helped me fall asleep faster or gave me a better sleep than not taking anything at all, but at least it didn’t give me an experience like Dream Water.
I know, I know, not the best review – but that’s the gamble with subscription boxes. I won’t discredit Bulubox entirely, however. They have a great program that gives you points for every box you buy to put toward full-sized products (if you like them), and you can purchase said products directly from Bulubox’s website. Bulubox also has great customer service. After ordering my first box, I emailed them to ask if any of the products would contain dairy. They said if any did, they would swap it out with another dairy-free product. Because of that, I ordered another box to see if it would be any better. I just got it in the mail yesterday and haven’t tried anything yet, but I’m already much more excited about the contents! I’ll be sharing that review with you all as soon as I give all the products a go. I also got my first every NatureBox that I’ll be trying soon!
Have you tried any subscription boxes? Which ones do you love or are you dying to try?
Disclosure: Bulubox did not ask me to try out their product. It was my decision to do this review and all opinions expressed are on my own.
