Got that song stuck in your head, didn’t I? Apologies.
I have some big life changes coming up, and while I tend to keep this here blog and my personal life/career pretty separate, I felt I’d make an exception today.
This past Monday was my last day at my job. Donald Trump came by and told me, “Ya FIRED!”
Just kidding! I wasn’t fired, but if Donald Trump had come to my office and said that I probably would have laughed and told him his toupee was crooked.
Reality shows and bad toupees aside, I got a new job that starts next Monday! I’m pretty excited! A little background on what I do for a living: I stand on the same street corner everyday and deliver fortune-cookie like advice for a dollar a word. Now, I’ll be doing the same thing but on a different corner. And I’ll be charging $1.20 per word. Movin’ on up! Since I’m in a great mood today and because I love you all so much, here’s a freebie: When you squeeze an orange, orange juice comes out – because that’s what’s inside.
So wise, I know.
Ok, ok, I’m not really a fortune-cookie teller… I work in advertising as a copywriter. If you watch Mad Men, I’m Peggy. Hopefully one day, I’ll be Don Draper – just without the stolen identity, cheating, and mid-life crisis stuff (SPOILER ALERT! – but seriously, you should be caught up by now. The last season ended like, a gazillion months ago). So what is my new job? I will still be a copywriter – just at a different agency for a different brand and with a slightly more senior roll.
Switching jobs is not an easy thing to do. The job I’m leaving was my first out of college, and I honestly could not have asked for a better place to launch my career. I have met so many incredible people and have been given so many opportunities I don’t think I would have gotten anywhere else. I mean, I got to meet the Old Spice Guy while filming this commercial:
I got to meet some amazing Olympic athletes while shooting print ads and commercials for Covergirl.
This boxer won Bronze in the 2012 games!
And this volleyball player won Silver!
And most recently, I got to create an entire campaign (ads in magazines, billboards, commercials, digital content) for a Covergirl/Hunger Games partnership.
This digital billboard was in Times Square! That’s a once in a lifetime opportunity :).
I even got to go to the NYC Catching Fire Premiere, where I got to mingle with all the stars. See how close I was to them. I mean, I’m pretty much famous now.
I have really had the most amazing experiences at this job. So why am I leaving? It wasn’t easy, but I simply felt it was time to move on. Change is never easy. It’s full of uncertainties, but if we never change anything, how can we ever push ourselves to realize our full potential? How’s that for a fortune, huh? If all else fails, maybe I can be a fortune-cookie teller!
So here’s to new opportunities, new experiences, and fortune cookies!
