Back when I started marathon training, I decided I was going to make my own recovery drinks and energy chews. I went to the health food stores and stocked up on goods. Well, my fit and focused readers, after 2 months of training I am finally ready to share my homemade energy chew recipe!
I know these don’t look particularly appetizing. I added those little light flares in an attempt to jazz up the picture, but there is really no way around the ugliness. But as they say, “Don’t a chew by its color!” That’s a saying right? (Well, also don’t judge a chew by its shape. Or its wrapping. Moving on…)
Despite their appearance, these chews have a a nice, sweet lemony taste and definitely help perk me up during longer runs. I still use brand name chews from time to time (mostly because I have a few free samples and don’t want them to go to waste), but for the most part I’ve been sticking to these Fitful Focus Fuel bites.
If you like brand name chews (like Clif Shot Bloks or Cytomax Energy Drops), these don’t have the same gummy texture (which is something I kind of like about store bought chews). However, these homemade bites are more easily consumed by the body due to the simplicity of the ingredients. It’s also nice knowing that I can pronounce every ingredient in my chews. I would love to try some variations of this recipe to see if I can get more fruity or berry flavors vs. the lemon, but the lemon is pretty refreshing a few miles in.
I was surprised at how easily these chews came together. The only “hard” part about this process was wrapping each of these little suckers in cellophane! Here is one chew for size reference (about the size of a quarter).
Have you ever made/would you ever make your own energy chews or gels?
