Speaking of the Spartan Race, Joe De Sena (founder of Spartan Race) is coming out with a new book: Spartan Up! It won’t be released until May, but I got a sneak peak and am pretty excited for it to come out so I can read the whole thing. Here’s a quick bit from Joe about what Spartan Up! is all about:
Spartan Up!, spells trouble for your comfort zone, just like it did for those Olympic wrestlers. It may, initially, feel more like a combat zone as your eyes scan the pages. For so long you’ve had a very clear sense of what you could and couldn’t do in life. Maybe the “could dos” were very limited, or maybe they were more expansive, but there have been boundaries you wouldn’t cross, obstacles you wouldn’t confront. By the time you finish my book, you’ll be motivated to tackle challenges with passion and eagerness, just like a Spartan racer keeps going toward the next hurdle, exhausted but constantly refueled by his or her newfound capabilities.
To be honest, it sounds intimidating, but it also sounds awesome! I feel the same way about the Spartan Races themselves. Here’s a little more about what the book will entail:
Spartan Up! is based on a series of concepts. The three most important are:
- Question your Assumptions
- Less is More
- Discipline is Everything
Joe believes these concepts will help you develop what those in the Spartan world call “obstacle immunity” both in Spartan Races and life in general. A little audio snippet from the man himself:
The book will be comprised of 10 chapters, each of which is designed to teach you how to apply the Spartan way of life to every aspect of your life: food/diet, working out, health, business/work, education, relationships, and even parenting.
Throughout the book, Joe will provide descriptions of Spartan Race obstacles and how they symbolize greater life challenges. He’ll give guidance and advice on how to apply the lessons of those obstacles to life, provide examples from his own history in adventure racing and business, and give examples of those who have undertaken Spartan challenges, people who are just like you and me.
By the end Spartan Up!, Joe says you’ll feel like you’ve run an entire race (and have the same sense of accomplishment and empowerment). He also says you may view him as “life coach from hell,” but you’ll come to realize he has a heart of gold and simply wants readers to experience the same breakthroughs he has. Another quick word from Joe:
If I had a life coach, I don’t think I’d want him to reside from the depth of Satan’s lair, but hey, this guy is healthy and successful, so I’m absolutely intrigued by what he has to say. I have a feeling this book will make me feel nervous at first. Based on what Spartan Races stand for, I think Joe’s tactics will really push me out of my comfort zone. That said, I truly believe we can’t grow as people until we step outside our boxes and try new things, so while I’m a bit anxious about what this book holds, I’m excited, as well. I hope it’s an empowering read.

NOTE: Spartan Race, Inc is providing me with a copy of Spartan Up! when it is released in May. In exchange, they asked that I help promote the book and provide a review once read. That said, all opinions expressed in this blog are my own and I would never help promote a product or brand I do not believe in.

I would be excited to try a spartan race, but a bit intimidated with obstacles involving upper arm strength!
