One must-do every fall? Apple-picking of course! I try to go apple picking every year. I failed in my mission the last 2 years, but not for lack of trying. Last year, I attempted to go on a gorgeous fall weekend out on Long Island. Unfortunately, the apple orchards are on the same road as all the big Long Island wineries. The winos were out in full force and traffic was so bad, we couldn’t even get to the orchard. The year before, I tried to go in New Jersey with my cousin. When we got to the orchard, all the apples had already been picked!
This year, I tried again in a 3rd state. My parents recently moved to Pennsylvania and bragged about a cider mill by their new house. Lucky for me, they had an orchard for apple and pumpkin picking. I went out to visit last weekend. Here are some highlights:
Add that one to the bucket!
Family picking time!

And of course we can’t leave out the pumpkins!
With the help of my tall dad, we were able to reach the apples at the tops of the trees – the prize, elite, crème de la crème of apples. We got a nice big mix of Golden Delicious and Stayman varieties.
There he is getting the ones at the top!
I’ve been experimenting this week with a bunch of ways to eat up all these apples, and of course, we had to make apple pie!
My mom is following Weight Watchers, so we picked out this Apple Tartlet recipe from Laaloosh (they post all the nutritional and point information). We used four of the most scrumptious looking Golden Delicious apples form our pickings, and the tartlets came out super tasty.
The great thing about these tartlets is you get all the deliciousness of apple pie, but they are already created into portion sizes. Each tartlet is less than 90 calories! I’ll have two, please!
Have you gone apple picking yet this season? Any fun apple recipes to share?
