I’ve been struggling to stick to my monthly goals all year. I think it might be because I don’t have a clear fitness goal in my head. In the past, I made it my mission to complete a specific strength training program or train for a race. Right now, I don’t have any races on my calendar, and I think I’m struggling to find a fitness routine I really enjoy. Last month, I tried to get into Kayla’s Bikini Body Guide… again. I’ve tried to get into this program a few times, and for some reason, I never make it past week four. The program calls for three workouts a week. I averaged two a week (along with some runs). I’m feeling guilty for not giving it all I’ve got, but maybe I’m just not that into the workouts. Maybe it’s time to try something completely new.
I’m also struggling when it comes to nutrition. I eat really well during the week, but then the weekend comes and all I want to do is sit out in the gorgeous weather and brunch and lunch and wine and dine. That means I don’t workout on the weekends (I used to do long runs on Saturdays or Sundays), Iām not eating all that well on the weekends, and I’m not nearly as good at meal prep as I’d like.
It’s possible I’m being too hard on myself. Maybe I just need to find a goal that excites me. Maybe I need to get a race on the calendar or sign up for some classes. I don’t feel like I’m in a funk anymore, but I do feel like I need to get my workout mojo back.
So my only goal this month is to find a type of workout or program that gets me excited to pop out of bed in the morning. That’s it. I think the nutrition will follow once I have something I feel like I can stay devoted to.
If there’s a type of workout you love or a program that you stuck with, I’d love to hear about it! And of course, I want to hear all about your Wild Workout Wednesday Adventures.
Let’s Chat:
What workouts have excited you lately?

I 100% hear you there. Right now, running is the only thing that I’m excited about, but that is going to have to change very soon!

I may not know you well enough to say this but I would say hell to the yes you’re being too hard on yourself š 8020, Sister!
Even if your weekends are chock full of whining dining and relaxing ā ā you are still kicking ass and taking names!
Maybe you don’t need any goal. Maybe 2017 is your year to chillax and reset. I think as long as you’re still active you can safely take a little while off from having a dedicated plan.

I can completely relate. I was feeling that way earlier this year and it took me a while to get back into my groove. Also, I did BBG for a while — I think I made it about 5-6 weeks in. I wasn’t a fan either. I need something with more variety to keep me interested!
Even when I’m training for a particular race, I still have to have some monthly goals. For me, having the short-term goals to check off each day gives me a definite sense of accomplishment…and if the monthly things don’t work out, I can move on with ZERO guilt (often times, some of these goals become permanent routines because I love the results).

Like you, I also find it more challenging to stick to a plan when I am not training for something specific. All your weekend brunches and wining sound kind of fun. I am sure you will find the balance you are looking for

Hi Nicole! Don’t be too hard on yourself! I think life has seasons and sometimes you focus on fitness more than others.
With that said, if you feel in your heart it’s time to get back at it…. a class or goal always helps!

I’m the same way when it comes to nutrition. I eat like its my last meal on Earth once the weekend comes, lol. I’m definitely a work in progress!
I think we all need a new workout routine from time to time. It’s easy to get stuck in a rut. I know that you’ll find something that works for you! If you have Classpass in Austin, I think you should check it out. Great way to try a bunch of studios for a small fee.

Fitness goes in seasons – I think it is normal to get burnt out on some workouts! Find what sounds fun – whether it’s yoga or barre or a core work class. And most of all, don’t be too hard on yourself!
You are not alone in occasionally getting in a workout rut. I have been attending a 5:45 am Bodypump class once a week which I enjoy getting up for. I also use Beachbody On Demand when I’m lacking motivation, Sean T and Autumn always find a way to get me moving!
I definitely think you’re being too hard on yourself. I know it feels different when you’re working on a goal vs just working out but you are still working out. You are still eating well most of the time. I think you can look for another program if you want but remember you don’t have to either. The goal can just be living a healthy, happy life – not getting ripped in 60 days or something like that.

Maybe joining a studio would be a good way to get your motivation back? I have an awesome yoga and barre studio in my neighborhood and I just love them! It’s nice when people actually miss you when you’re not there.
But please don’t be too hard on yourself! You’ll get back at it soon!

I’m all about weight lifting and barre classes! I have to make myself do cardio – and sometimes I count the barre classes I teach as cardio… – but those two workouts are what I’ve stuck with. I go to a group training session 4 times a week for weight lifting and I’m in the studio teaching or taking class nearly every day.
I know exactly what you mean! The only workout “routine” that I can stick to is running. That’s because I’ve been signing up for half marathons which pretty much requires me to train and run. I teach spin and HIIT classes each once a week, but other than that I’m in a slump!
Obviously, it’s barre for me!
I do think we go through season where we work out more, and some where it’s less and we spend more time doing and enjoying, and both are okay!
For me, last year wasn’t super fitness focused which was what I needed to get into the swing of things for this year.

I’ll be honest and say that as much as I love running, I actually stay on track with workouts and nutrition when I don’t have a race scheduled. I do better with variety in my workouts so I don’t get bored and when I’m training for a race, as I am now, all I seem to have time and energy for is running. That leaves me bored and burnt out. I’m actually looking forward to getting this half behind me so I can get back on track. I know, it sounds weird! š
I’m working on improving my nutrition and not being as hard on myself as well. x_x It can be so hard to do though! Best of luck to you on your goals!

It sounds like having an upcoming race is a huge motivator for you. If that’s the case, I agree with signing up for another race. If not, perhaps figure out why those races motivate you. Is it the competition? Is it the excitement of joining with a bunch of other runners?
Personally, I find it highly motivating to workout with a partner. It’s much harder to bail on them than it is to bail on myself.
As for nutrition, what might help is to just cut the bad meals you have on the weekends in half. You don’t have to go from bad to great over night. Moderation, as they say, is key. I allow myself a couple of cheat meals a week just so I don’t feel like I’m depriving myself.

I’m doing mostly MMA-inspired cross training because it fits so well into my schedule and it’s fun.
