Did you all have a good holiday weekend? I enjoyed a whirlwind of Hanukkah-ing, Christmas-ing and seeing family. It flew by, but I enjoyed every minute of it. If you follow me on social media, you may have seen what Will and I got for Christmukkah…
Meet Moose! Moose is a 10 1/2 week-old Bearded Collie. He’s the cutest, sweetest puppy in the world. For real.
Will and I have been wanting a dog for forever, but it wasn’t really feasible when we lived in Brooklyn. Now that we’re in Texas, a puppy is more realistic. We’d been searching for the right puppy for a while, and when Will’s sister found a Bearded Collie puppy in New Jersey just a few minutes from my parents, we decided to pick him up Christmas weekend.
We’ve only had Moose for a few days, and he’s already so smart. He knows to pee on the grass (so much so that he wouldn’t pee in the Pet Relief area at the airport because it had tile that only looked like grass but wasn’t real grass)…
…he knows where to find his food and water, he already knows his way back to our apartment from his grassy pee spot outside, and he’s already learning “sit.” On top of his smarts, he’s the sweetest. He’s incredibly mellow. He doesn’t go chasing after anything. Instead, he sits and kind of takes it all in. That said, buddy knows how to play. He spent the weekend with his puppy cousin and uncle (Will’s sister’s dog, Bumper, and his parents’ dog, Remi), and they played and wrestled for hours on end.
Right now, I’m working on potty training him and getting him comfortable in his new surroundings. Once he’s big enough, I hope he’ll come running with me. Beardies, as the breed is affectionately known, are herding dogs, so running with me will be a great way for him to get out the energy he’s sure to have.
Be sure to follow me on Snapchat (@fitfulfocus) and check out my Instagram Story from time to time for more Moose, and if you want constant updates, follow him on Instagram! That’s right, you can find Moose @MooseTheBeardie.

Hopefully Moose will remain as mellow — sometimes there’s a honeymoon period getting settled in while they’re on their best behavior. But enjoy that puppy time — it goes way too fast!
Herding dogs would be challenging to run with, I think (we had a sheltie growing up) — because they like to herd, d’oh! I have to be careful with Bandit because if he sees another dog or person, he’ll just weave in front of me. Otherwise he’s pretty good.
Chester was our first dog as a couple, btw. We waited 20 years before we got a dog! Too long!
And here’s a post I wrote a while ago about training: https://chocolaterunsjudy.wordpress.com/2016/04/22/5-tips-to-start-training-your-dog-or-cat/
