I typically tackle my long training runs in the morning. I do this for two reasons.
- It’s cooler outside in the morning.
- Most races start early, so it’s good practice for race day.
I typically don’t eat anything before short morning runs, but long training runs and big races are a different animal. If I’m going on a run that will take me more than an hour to complete, I need some fuel in my belly to carry me through. My go-to is oatmeal with sliced banana and almond butter, but when I’m on the go, this can be tough.
Sometimes I make my oats, transfer them to a Solo cup and take them with me while I travel to a race, but trying to eat a cup of hot oats while I’m walking or driving isn’t ideal. I decided I need to find a better way to get my pre-run oatmeal fix.
So, ladies and gentlemen, meet my new Pre-Run Oatmeal Energy Bites!
These bites contain the oats I love to fuel up with as well as the almond butter I like to mix in. They also have a touch of green-banana flour which doesn’t actually taste like bananas but does provide me with the necessary potassium I need to avoid mid-run cramps.
What else gives me potassium? I’m glad you asked, my potassium-loving friend.
These babies also contain the magic of Natural Delight’s Medjool Dates. Medjool dates have even MORE potassium than bananas (50% more to be precise). That means not only will these bites help me avoid cramping up mid-run, but they also provide me with enough potassium to help my muscles recover post run!
The Medjool dates in these fantastically delicious bites give me a boost of natural energy, thanks to the fact that they’re complex carbs. That means I digest them slower, making them more useful to me throughout my run.
Dates are also what hold these nibbles of joy together. All the more reason to love them!
After your run, recover faster with this Cold Brew & Cacao Recovery Smoothie, snack on these Copycat Blueberry RX Bars mid-day, and treat yourself to this Chocolate Caramel Dairy Free “Ice Cream” at night. All of them harness the power of Medjool Dates!

- 2 Tbsp green-banana flour

- 1 tsp vanilla extract
- ½ cup natural almond butter
- Add all ingredients to a food processor.
