I’m fortunate enough to live in a city filled with incredible restaurants, especially when it comes to vegan food. I’m the type of person that would rather try somewhere new than go to the same old spot. Maybe I’m an anti-loyalist, maybe I have food A.D.D. (except for when it comes to smoothies), or maybe I’m an experimentalist! Debate aside, I was pumped to test out a new vegan spot in NYC last weekend: Suite ThreeOhSix.
I’d read about this underground dining joint and was immediately intrigued. Suite ThreeOhSix is an intimate, plant-based supperclub with a maximum of 30 guests per meal. Unlike a restaurant, it is only open for dinner 2-3 nights a week. Each meal is 5-7 courses, and the menu changes every night!
The menu is not announced ahead of time – it’s kept a surprise for the guests (sorry picky eaters). This gives Chef is Daphne Cheng (and the occasional guest chef) the ability to experiment with new dishes each night. It also gives the diner a different experience each time he/she attends a meal.
The dinners can be rather pricey, but when I saw a Groupon for a meal for two, I jumped at the deal. Plus, I thought it would be perfect Mother-Daughter date!
So, long story made… well… I guess it’s already long, but my mom and I enjoyed a wonderful meal on Saturday night. There wasn’t a single dish I didn’t like, and there wasn’t a single thing I couldn’t eat because it was all vegan! Check it out:
1st course: asparagus + sunflower seeds and sprouts + red wine vinaigrette
2nd course: fennel bisque + white pepper creme + buckwheat + cara cara orange + upland cress
3rd course: golden beet sashimi + uni plum rice + yucca fries (I have to make myself some of these!) + red watercress + thai chili aioli + szechuan pepper ponzu
4th course: lemon leaf couscous + brussel sprouts + carrot puree + mushroom duxelle + corn cream + tarragon
5th course: moscato rice pudding + coconut + toasted chia + apple blossom
Plus, you can see right into the kitchen to see Chef Daphne at work!
I will say the only part of the experience that wasn’t top notch was that there wasn’t any signage for the club. My Mom arrived first and stood outside what looked like a residential building in utter confusion. Finally, other people began to show up and looked just as confused. Finally, someone just buzzed #306 and they were all let in. Suite ThreeOhSix is literally just that, a suite – a loft space in a residential building to be exact – where Chef Daphne hosts these supperclubs and teaches cooking classes. I’m not sure why there wasn’t any signage – maybe because it isn’t a restaurant that isn’t allowed? Not so sure. Whatever the reason, the meal was delicious so I’m one happy plant-based chica.
