2020 is in full swing, and with it comes an all new season of the Runners Who Wine Podcast! Annmarie and I are pumped to be back with a new season. We have a lot of great episode topics lined up, but we’re kicking things off with something everyone loves: sleep!
I used to have the hardest time falling asleep. Whether I was thinking about with all the things I’d have to do, how I just couldn’t get comfortable, how stressed out I was about the fact that I wasn’t sleeping and now only have 6 hours, 5 hours, 4 hours to get reach slumberland. If it was the night before a big race my mind would race (pun intended) even more. Did I set my alarm? Wait… does the race start at 6, not 7? What if I forget my socks? What if there’s traffic and I miss the start line? BAH!
Stress and anxiety are the biggest sleep-suckers, but over the years I’ve learned how to reduce them (moving to Austin helped big time) and have started to get better and better sleep. While I’ve learned to reduce stress and anxiety in my every day life, I’d be lying if I I’m totally stress-free before a big race. I still get the pre-race jitters. I still worry I’ll miss my alarm. However, I have a few tricks up my sleeve to help myself unwind, destress and get a good night’s sleep before I toe that starting line, and my kick-ass co-host, Annmarie, and I are here to share them all with you in the latest episode of the Runners Who Wine Podcast. Getting a good night sleep before a race is something I really struggle with! Will take a listen

I never, ever, sleep well before a race. I have all my gear laid out, and usually two alarms set, but I still have anxiety about falling asleep and also waking up. The crazy thing is, I have never overslept on race day. And, the limited slumber doesn’t seem to affect me (that I’m aware of)…so it is what it is.
Oh girl, I freaking love sleeping… As long as I’m prepped for the race the next day, I’m usually all good. This requires laying everything out and packing all the bags ahead of time, of course.
I definitely have a hard time with this. One thing I have found to be key is to get to sleep extra early that way if I have wake ups at least I know that I will get some rest.

I don’t sleep great on the best nights, so pre-race is always hard for me.
I am always happy to have any suggestions and tips to help out. A good night’s sleep is sooooo important!
