Being forced to hang up our running shoes due to injury or illness is a runner’s worst nightmare, but it happens to the best of us. Unfortunately, the best thing a runner can do when he or she is injured is NOT RUN. I know, I know. That’s like telling a dog not to like bones, but trying to get back to running before your body is fully healed can result in prolonging the injury and therefore prolonging your return to the pavement or trails.
I’ve been there, facing the plague of injury, and my amazing cohost, Annmarie, is currently navigating her way back to running after being out for the count due to illness.
In this week’s episode, we’re sharing all our best tips for what runners can do when they can’t run. We’ve got a ton of great ideas for you depending on your activity-level abilities, as well as some advice for how to get back to running when the time comes.
Tune in here, on Soundcloud or on iTunes. Happy listening and happy healing!

Have you ever been sidelined from running? How did you deal?

I was sidelined from running for the first time last summer. Drove me crazy! I tried different ways to stay fit, some of which I really liked, but none as satisfying as running. As a result of that injury, I now do Body Pump regularly, which I really like. I did try water running to keep my fitness level up, and I think it sort of worked, but I didn’t really like it. It was kind of boring, just “running” around the deep end of the pool.

Great topic! I took 6 weeks off last summer for tendonitis, and have had my share of other injuries over the years… it’s never easy!
