When I first started running, I quickly learned how important nutrition was. I started doing research into what I was supposed to eat before, during and after training runs and was quickly overwhelmed. Fueling was also further complicated by the fact that I was a vegetarian at the time.
Rather than try to piece together tips and tricks from different sources, I decided to follow the advice of an athlete I admired: Brendan Brazier. Brendan is a plant-based ultramarathon champion and also happens to be the creator of Vega, one of my absolute favorite brands.
I bought his book, Thrive Fitness, read through it faster than I’ve probably read any other book in my life and started applying his tips to my running routine. What a difference I saw! I was no longer running on fumes and was recovering so much faster.
Wellllllll now Brendan is back with the second edition of Thrive Fitness, and it’s even better than before!
The original book has tons of fueling tips and delicious recipes. The second edition still has all those wonderful things, but now it also has all these goodies:
- a forward by tennis star, Venus Williams (I’m for anything that chick endorses!)
- all new photos
- a completely new workout plan that emphasizes the use of bodyweight (no expensive equipment needed!)
- new digital, social and video content!
The new workout plan is the most exciting addition. Brendan explains the importance of each move, shows you how to do them with step-by-step instructions and gives you a complete six-week plan and training log. I definitely plan on incorporating some of his moves into my cross-training routine.
Long story short, here’s what this book can help you with:
- sculpt strong, lean muscles
- reduce body fat
- prevent disease and injuries
- increase energy
- cut sugar cravings
- sharpen mental clarity

Pistol squats are so hard! I can’t do an unassisted one, but I’m working on it.
Those pistol squats look punishing! I can only get down about half that far haha. I love reading different books on fitness and training – even if their philosophy differs from my own, there’s always something valuable to learn.

Hi there, new follower 🙂 I was searching for fitness blogger link parties and glad I found you 🙂 Thank you for hosting this event.
The book sounds very interesting. While I am not vegan, there are days I prefer to stick to the basics to detox my body and give my digestive system a rest!
Looking forward to your future posts. Have a great weekend! xoxo Deniza
Welcome! Welcome! Looking forward to following you, as well 🙂
You know I love my Vega and this book I can’t even… I haven’t finished it yet because I left it on the kitchen table and didn’t realize it until I went to pull it out on the plane but I love it more than the first if that is possible because I think everyone can get something out of it and it is geared to a bigger range of people. Also that it focuses more on balance and recovery.
Sarah recently posted…Chocolate Creme Egg Protein Shake
Totally agree! You have to finish it!
I fuel my fitness with different things, depending on the activity, but I like to focus on fruits and veggies for longer activities like volleyball tournaments. Thanks for hosting this giveaway! I love the Vega line of products (especially their pre-workout energizer).
