The sun was shining, the crowd was cheering, the announcer was counting down, the starting horn blared, and I was off! I ran passed my family holding up motivational signs and got into my groove as DJs pumped the beats on the sidelines. With one kilometer to go, I picked it up and sprinted to the finish. Water and bananas greeted me like old friends. I high-fived everyone around me, got my finishers medal, and set off to a celebratory lunch.
Well… that’s what I was picturing in my head as I ran a virtual 10K last weekend as part of the 1st Annual Running Bloggers Virtual Race.
The reality of it was that there was no crowd, announcer, or starting horn. I just set out on a nice morning run with Nike+ to guide me as I pushed myself to run a 10K for the first time in over year. There were no other runners and no actual finish line, but I still had a blast (and I did grab some water and a banana afterwards).
Over the last few weeks, I rocked out my 5K in record time (for me) and worked to get my mileage up for the 10K that I conquered on Memorial Day!
I hadn’t run a 10K in over a year, and I’m not gunna lie; it was tough! I didn’t run it at my fasted pace, but I’m just glad I did it! 6 miles today, 26.2 tomorrow! (And by tomorrow, I mean January).
I want to thank Caroline for putting this event together and for all the other amazing runners that virtually ran with me. I hope you all had as much fun as I did! Annddd even though the Virtual Race is over, there are still reasons to run! National Running Day is June 5th, I have a fun run in July, a Tough Mudder to train for in October, and my first ever Marathon in January – so I’ll definitely be keeping up the miles!
Have you ever participated in a Virtual Race? What did you think?
