Ok. Big news. Are you ready?
I’m not sure if you are…
You really really want to know?
Ok, fine. I’ll tell you.
I joined a gym!
I know. Sorry. You’re probably disappointed. It doesn’t seem like that big a deal, but it is for me.
You see, I’ve taken a little pride in the fact that I’ve stayed healthy despite not having a gym membership for the last year and halfish. Gyms in NYC are so expensive, and I just couldn’t justify shelling out $80+ dollars a month for a gym when I could do the same workouts at home or outside for free.
Well, then I trained for a marathon and realized the importance of a treadmill. I absolutely adore running outside, but 4+ days a week of long distance running on NYC sidewalks takes its toll on the knees. Also, it’s getting mighty cold outside. My shower pipes froze for goodness sake! If my shower thinks it’s too cold to function, there’s no way I’m running outside, especially if I don’t have a hot shower to come home to!
I would invest in my own treadmill, but I live in Brooklyn. Ain’t nobody got room for that.
Regardless of my angry knees and frozen shower, I still didn’t want to pay out the wazoo for a gym membership, which is why I was ecstatic to learn about Blink Fitness. Blink gyms are fancy schmancy Equinox Gym’s budget-friendly cousin.
Now, don’t go thinking this gym is some slimy, hand-me-down version of Equinox. They are actually quite beautiful! And really big! All of the equipment is brand new, the locker rooms and workout spaces are clean, and the staff is super friendly.
These are just a few of the treadmills. There was a whole other section!
Are you ready to hear how much it costs?
I’m not sure if you are…
Ok, enough of that.
It’s only $20 a month!
I’ll wait for a moment while you pick your jaw up off the floor.
How? You ask.
While all of the equipment is beautiful (and there’s a sh*t ton of it), the gym doesn’t offer classes. They also don’t have towel service or bathroom amenities a la shampoo/conditioner/blow dryers. But that’s it! Honestly, I’m not going to miss the classes and I can bring my own towel and shampoo from home. Why isn’t every gym like this?
Oh, AND I have access to every Blink location in the city. I mean, does it get better?
If you couldn’t tell, I’m pretty excited about this gym thing. Now I can do some of my shorter runs on a treadmill to save my knees and ward off frostbite. And I still feel budget savvy.
It really is possible to stay fit and focused on a budget. Sometimes you just have to find the hidden gems like youtube workouts, free classes, and budget-conscious gyms!
